In its current state, Mandarin Dual Language is a lottery-based language immersion program in the Chapel Hill- Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS). ALL CHCCS children, regardless of ethnic background, aptitude, or CHCCS district are welcome to apply for the lottery starting in Kindergarten. Younger silblings of currently enrolled students are given priority for acceptance into the program. Enrollment is capped at two large classes at Glenwood Elementary School where students spend 50% of the day learning in Chinese and 50% in English.
MDL programs are growing in popularity. See the Mandarin Immersion Parents Council for a current list of US programs. As of Jan 12, 2019, there were 278 programs nationwide.
